How to Care for Teak Garden Furniture

Why Teak Is Built to Last
Teak is one of the world's finest hardwoods — naturally dense, oil-rich, and resistant to moisture, insects, and the unpredictable British weather. With the right care routine, your teak furniture will last decades, developing a beautiful silver-grey patina or retaining its warm honey tones depending on your preference.
Routine Cleaning
A seasonal clean is all teak really needs. Use a soft-bristled brush and a mild solution of washing-up liquid in warm water. Scrub gently along the grain, rinse thoroughly, and allow the timber to dry completely in a well-ventilated spot before applying any treatment. Avoid pressure washers, which can open the grain and cause damage over time.
Oiling vs. Allowing to Weather
Teak's natural oils mean it is perfectly happy left untreated. Over time, the surface will transition from golden-brown to a distinguished silver-grey — a look many of our customers actively prefer. If you'd rather preserve the original warm tone, apply a specialist teak oil or golden teak sealant once or twice a year, working along the grain and wiping away any excess.
Removing Stains and Marks
Surface marks from food, wine, or leaf tannins can usually be lifted with a dedicated teak cleaner. Apply, leave for a few minutes, scrub gently, and rinse. For stubborn grey blotches caused by damp, a light sand with fine-grit paper (always with the grain) followed by a single coat of teak oil will restore the surface.
End-of-Season Care
Before autumn sets in, give your furniture a thorough clean and allow it to dry fully. A breathable protective cover protects against leaf stain and frost and reduces the frequency of deep cleaning the following spring. Store cushions indoors or in a weatherproof box over winter.
